what are dermal fillers?

A dermal filler is a gel like substance that is injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines, soften creases or enhance facial features. Dermal fillers can be made from a number of substances.

We exclusively use premium dermal fillers made of hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring complex sugar already present within the tissues of our skin. Therefore these gel fillers are very biocompatible and carry a low risk when used as a filler agent.

What does treatment involve?

I will provide a thorough consultation prior to any treatments. This enables you to express your concerns freely and confidently. Following a careful assessment a tailored treatment plan will be provided.

Discomfort is minimised by local anaesthetic cream. The dermal fillers also contain local anaesthetic to further aid discomfort.

There are several treatment techniques that may be utilised. The dermal filler may be in injected under the skin using very fine needles or a blunt instrument (cannula) may be used.

With each and every treatment I will endeavour to keep injection sites to an absolute minimum which will in turn result in less trauma, swelling and bruising.

The treatment may take 30 – 45 minutes depending on the area being treated. Most people resume their daily routine immediately after treatment.

Approximately 6-24 months.

But the answer is more complicated than most patients think. There are several factors that influence a filler’s longevity, including;

• which dermal filler is used, it’s consistency, the volume and the area of the face where it is injected.

• Your age, health and lifestyle.

• Variations in the speed at which the body metabolises fillers.

Longevity of results will be discussed at your consultation.

It is important to keep in mind that no matter where you choose to have dermal filler injected, regularly scheduled maintenance treatments will be required for the results to be maintained.

what happens after dermal filler treatment?

The effect is immediate, but true results aren’t evident for 2-3 weeks as it takes time for the dermal filler to settle and integrate with your skin.

The treatment is minimally invasive and therefore downtime is minimal, however do consider the following and pre plan treatment prior to any important social engagements.

• Expect possible bruising that can persist for 7-10 days.

• Swelling is inevitable and peaks for the first 24-48 hours then will resolve over 7-10 days.

Your satisfaction is a priority therefore a follow up appointment will be arranged 3 weeks following your dermal filler.

You’ll be given verbal and written aftercare instructions.

is dermal filler safe?

Dermal fillers are a medical procedure and therefore some risk is involved. This will be fully discussed at your consultation prior to any treatment.

The side effects are generally injection site related such as slight redness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, skin discolouration, pain and tenderness.

Some very rare complications include allergic reactions, granulomas, delayed onset reactions, damage to vascular structures, ischaemia and blindness (very rare). 

The dermal filler materials have dramatically evolved over time and extensive research has established they’ve an excellent safety profile.

Your safety is paramount. I have extensive experience and all measures will be taken with technique to minimise complications.

Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, are currently unwell with any infection, have a history of autoimmune diseases or multiple allergies cannot be treated with dermal fillers.
